Hi All... if you haven't heard by now we are officially closed. We closed our doors a few days early just before the end of the month and are now enjoying our retirement! Well, maybe at least a few weeks off before we get back into our next exciting adventure... whatever that may be!

Thanks to all our dedicated clientele, you will surely be missed and we will always carry such fond memories of all the friends we made during our time with babycheeks. Hope to cross paths with you all again some day.

Thanks to Craigslist, we have met new customers and first time visitors to our store! For anyone who comes across the posting put on craigslist today saying babycheeks is "closing our doors at the end of the month and will be giving away all our fixtures today and tomorrow from 12-5".... please please disregard this! It is completely untrue and we seem to have found ourselves the butt of someones jokes this week as our phone number has been listed on craigslist a number of times this week as the contact for some pretty funny items.
Has anyone else had to deal with a scam like this? We have contacted Craigslist to let them know, but not sure what they will be able to help. So we thought we at least need to clarify with all our customers in case you come across the posting. Now... hope you all have a great weekend!

This recall involves the following 2 types of plush toys sold under the brand name "Creature Comforts Plush Toys".

"Husky Hugs" plush toy: A 9-inch mother husky hugging a baby husky. The mother has a red bow around its neck, and the baby husky has a red Canada hat on its head. The toys contain polyester and plastic pellets, and have hard plastic eyes. The recalled toy can be identified by UPC 069202940187.

"Peek-a-Boo Pal" plush toy: A reversible moose and puffin (bird) toy. The puffin is black and white with an orange beak, and the moose is brown. Both animals have hard plastic eyes. The recalled toy can be identified by UPC 069202707063

Health Canada's sampling and evaluation program has identified that the hard eyes on the baby husky and on the puffin can detach; these small parts pose a choking hazard to young children.

Parkdale Novelty Co. Ltd. and Health Canada have not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the use of these toys.

Have your children tired of their old books? Are those books taking up room in the closet? Let babycheeks help you clean out your kid's book collection and pick-up some new reading. On Saturday July 17^th and Sunday July 18^th , join us for a weekend-long book drive, where donated books can be swapped for new ones.

Our kids grow out of books and so often, they remain untouched and take up space. A book drive is a perfect way to trade-in the books your children no longer read for new ones. It’s also a sustainable way to recycle the books so that another child can enjoy them as much as your own have.

There has been a recent rise in consumer product recalls for drop-side cribs this past week, with the following North American brands being recalled by Health Canada:

Drop-side Cribs by Million Dollar Baby

Drop-side Cribs by Simmons Juvenile Products

"Scandi" model Drop-side Cribs made by LaJobi Inc.

Drop-Side Crib by Dorel Distribution Canada

Drop-side Cribs by Delta Enterprise Corp.

For the most part, the cribs' drop-side hardware can break or become damaged, causing the drop-side to detach. If the drop-side detaches, it could create a space between the side of the crib and the mattress. Infants and toddlers could roll into this space and may become entrapped, which could lead to suffocation or strangulation, or they could fall out of the cribs.

More than 40 formulations of children's medications are being recalled in Canada, the United States and 10 other countries for failing to meet quality standards.

The recall applies to over-the-counter liquid medicines produced by McNeil Consumer Healthcare under the brand names Tylenol, Tylenol Plus, Motrin, Zyrtec and Benadryl. In Canada, the impact is limited to all lots of Children's Motrin and infants' Motrin liquid suspension products and Children's Tylenol Cough & Runny Nose liquid suspension. Here is a release describing the Canadian products affected by the recall.

The voluntary recall applies to all lots that have not yet expired and that were produced in the U.S. for distribution there, in Canada and in 10 other countries. Here are all the affected brands:

Tylenol Infants' Drops (7 different formulations).
Children's Tylenol Suspensions (8 formulations).
Children's Tylenol Plus Suspensions (9 formulations).
Motrin Infants' Drops (3 formulations).
Children's Motrin Suspensions (11 formulations).
Children's Zyrtec Liquids in Bottles (5 formulations).
Children's Benadryl Allergy Liquids in Bottles (1 formulation).

The company is advising consumers to stop giving the products to children as a precautionary measure.

Who is Free the Children?

Join babycheeks July 17-18th for a weekend-long book swap, where you can trade in the books your children no longer read, for new ones! In addition to encouraging children's literacy in our community, babycheeks has decided to use this event to accept donations for Free The Children--world’s largest network of children helping children through education.

Founded in 1995 by a then 12 year-old international child rights activist, Craig Kielburger, Free the Children now has more than one million youth involved in its innovative education and development programs in 45 countries. Since inception the organization has received the World’s Children’s Prize for the Rights of the Child (also known as the Children’s Nobel Prize), the Human Rights Award from the World Association of Non-Governmental Organizations, and has formed successful partnerships with leading school boards and Oprah’s Angel Network.

What do they do? The primary goals of the organization are:

Free children from poverty and exploitation
Free young people from the notion that they are powerless to affect positive change in the world.
Inspire young people to develop as socially conscious global citizens and become agents of change for their peers around the world.
Offer domestic empowerment programs and leadership training

babycheeks has set a goal of collecting 2,500 books, and we would love you to help us reach that goal! Just stop by the store and dropped off your gently used books (baby to tween) and come back in July to swap them for something new! All leftover books will be donated to Free the Children to use in one of their 500 schools built around the world.

Toy Buggy Recall

Step-2 Company, has announced a major toy recall in Canada and the U.S. on approximately 2.5 million of their ride-on toy buggies.

The car-like buggies, meant for toddlers two to three years old, have long handles allowing parents to push them like in a stroller, but are being recalled due to a defect that allows them to roll away uncontrolled.

Health Canada and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission made the joint recall on Tuesday deeming to toy that has been on the market since 1999 unfit and dangerous because the handles can come off!

Although Health Canada says it has not received any reports of incidents or injuries, there have been two incidents in the U.S. and fear there could be more.

The recall affects the following models:

715700, 792300, 7923TA, 7923OR, 796600, 7966TA, 768400, 882900 and 885700.

Consumers should inspect their toy to determine whether they have a buggy with a yellow knob where the handle attaches (on the back of the buggy). If they do, they should immediately stop using the buggy and contact Step2 to obtain a free repair kit.

Buggies that have a handle attached by a bolt with a white or black plastic head and nut are not included in this recall.

For more information, consumers may contact Step2 toll-free at 1-800-347-8372 between 8AM and 7PM EST Monday through Friday, or visit the the Step 2 website.

IMPORTANT NEWS: Infantino baby sling recall

A recall of baby slings is being made by Infantino after the product has been linked to three infant deaths.

The recall involves 15,000 Canadian-sold Infantino "SlingRider" and "Wendy Bellissimo" slings, as well as more than a million in the U.S.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission in the U.S. says babies can suffocate in the soft fabric slings. Parents are now being urged to immediately stop using the slings for babies under four months of age.

The recall comes as a relief for Raven Borstad -- mother of four -- who says she's tried her friend's Infantino sling, but alarm bells went off.

"When I've looked at the Infantino SlingRider I always think it looks more like a gym bag than it does like a sling and I wouldn't put my baby in a gym bag," she said.

Baby-wearing educators say the low sitting, cradle-like structure of the sling, along with the synching type of fabric, are safety hazards.

"Other risks are that the baby turns inward into the body and can actually be physically suffocated," said Arie Brentnall-Compton, certified baby wearing educator.

The president of Infantino says the company is willing to offer a free replacement baby carrier, activity gym or shopping cart cover to any affected consumer.

As it currently stands, no safety standards for infant sling carriers are in place. But, the Consumer Product Safety Commission says it is now working on one.

The slings were sold in the U.S. and Canada from January 2003 through March 2010.

Retailers include: Walmart and Babies "R" Us.

At first glance most people assume that the language they're using is conveying the message loud and clear. Would you be surprised to find out that most likely, it isn't?

Here's an example: Have you ever found yourself repeatedly telling your child NOT to do something, and they do it anyway? Or reminding them not to forget something and they do? (Ps... this one applies to husbands too!)

By applying the simple techniques you'll be gaining in this workshop, coupled with some awareness, you'll find yourself communicating your needs and life's lessons with your toddler, and family, much easier and create a calmer and healthier environment for everyone.

Reflexology is a special kind of hand & foot massage.

Paul, a Reflexologist, discovered its uses over 18 years ago studying Martial Arts. Usually after a class many participants would be tired, sore, & sometimes injured. After which their instructors would instruct them to rub their own feet down in various ways. Pain relief for aches and sprains was almost instantaneous in most cases where-as more serious ailments healed faster & with less complications.

As time went on Paul began utilizing Reflexology when he had a cold or cough, a headache, cleansings, even helping his father regain some control over Diabetes.

One thing you should know about Reflexology is that it's safe to use on everybody; including babies and toddlers. In fact, when your child gets a cold, begins teething, has colic, or basic bumps & bruises every child manages to find, Reflexology done properly will stimulate your Childs body's natural defenses to recover faster, with less discomfort, and in many cases without having to use strong medications.

In this next workshop you will learn a basic overview of the foot & how to use Reflexology to help your baby or toddler recover quicker, and naturally. Help relieve them from the discomforts of:

Playdate with Cinderella

Wow! What a fun fairytale event! And I think every one of the 72 little girls through here that day had some of their dreams come true! After some beautiful singalongs, stories, wishes, fairy dust and princess crafts each of us adults wished we were 3 or 4 again. We of course had to shed a few tears too when Cinderella burst into song... it was just so magical! So thank you Cinderella for coming all this way from a land far far away. You were so wonderul to have as our guest for the day and hope to visit with you again soon.

And a huge thanks goes out to our good friends Lucy Lime Studios for joining us for the day to photograph the playdate. We will post the link to their site once the Cinderella photos come available.
